Greetings to my fellow HR Professionals throughout the great state of Maine!

Spring has sprung and Maine HR Professionals are in full bloom working diligently on the many projects and initiatives that you will find in detail throughout the SHRM Maine State Council's website, as well as some that I have highlighted for you below:

The Maine State Council recently awarded two $500 scholarships to two HR Professionals and both intend to use the funds towards professional development opportunities.

The Maine State Council's Government Affairs Team is hosting a free Department of Labor half day event on June 6th. Have you sent in your RSVP yet?

Maine's Best Places to Work Committee is about to close registration for this year's program. Do you know how your company ranks?

The Maine State Council's Workforce Readiness Director is working closely with the Maine Employer's Initiative (MEI), HR Chapters and the Diversity Hiring Coalition to increase program sponsorship. Are you an MEI employer?

The next webinar in the State Council webinar series is scheduled for June 14th, 2012, from 9:00am - 10:00am. The topic is 'Creating an HR Strategic Plan' presented by Suzanne Benoit of Benoit Consulting which has been pre-approved for 1 hour of STRATEGIC credit.

Additionally, the Maine State Council has recently launched a new partnership with the Business Leadership Network. The purpose of Business Leadership Network is to raise employer awareness and provide information to employers about how they can take the first step to explore increasing the number of qualified individuals with disabilities in their organizations.

As the SHRM Maine Council State Director, I also had the recent priviledge to be present with Governor LePage at the Blaine House during a press conference when he signed 3 bills in law on April 18, 2012.  These bills, LD1913: "An Act to Review and Restructure the Workers Compensation System", LD 1314: "An Act to Standardize the Definition of Independent Contractor" and LD 1725; "An Act to Strengthen the Unemployment Insurance Laws and Reduce Unemployment Fraud" will help to improve Maine's business environment and open the door to jobs by making changes to workers compensation and unemployment benefits and clarifying what type of workers should be classified as independent contractors.

Please feel free to review the information on the website and contact us at any time.

Happy Spring!Avery

Blessings,

Kris Avery, SPHR
